-Jon Anik and Kenny Florian open up the broadcast running down the main event and tonight's debut of the flyweight division. But first, we've got The Ultimate Fighter's 11th season winner Court McGee and his bout with Constantinos Philippou.
FIGHT ONE: COURT MCGEE VS. CONSTANTINOS PHILIPPOU (MIDDLEWEIGHT)
ROUND ONE: McGee took the center and tried to walk Philippou down. Philippou circled around the outside and the crowd got on his case early. McGee connected on a right hand strike. Philippou landed a hard right and McGee backed away. Philippou connected on a hard uppercut that hurt McGee. He tried to engage but McGee recovered well. McGee connected on an overhand right. He threw a kick but ate a counter-right. McGee landed a good jab. McGee landed a nice body-to-head combo. The crowd booed some tentative standup action. Philippou landed a short combo. McGee landed a couple of punches in succession. Philippou landed a left. He got in with a nice right. McGee tried to shoot but he was shrugged off. McGee landed a hard combo. McGee shot in again but was held off. McGee landed a good left in close. They traded strikes. McGee landed a hard left and Philippou tripped on the cage as the round ended.
Penick's Scorecard: 10-9 Philippou. Very close round, but Philippou's power definitely had an effect and he landed the more damaging strikes overall. McGee's hanging right with him, and pressing the pace, but Philippou's definitely scoring.
ROUND TWO: Philippou landed a hard left early on that backed McGee up. McGee engaged and they exchanged strikes. Philippou landed another hard right and backed McGee away from him. McGee tried to grab a trip takedown, but failed to get it to the ground. Philippou landed a good strike again. McGee landed a good body kick. McGee again got stuffed on a body lock and ate a big uppercut. He grabbed the clinch again. They traded strikes in a big exchange. Philippou connected again and the round ended.
Penick's Scorecard: 10-9 Philippou. His power is absolutely the story of the fight thus far. McGee is landing, but not having much of an effect, and he can't get Philippou to the ground, either.
ROUND THREE: McGee landed a good left early and continued to walk forward. McGee got Philippou to the cage and landed a nice combination. He got in a good uppercut on the cage. McGee accidentally landed a low kick and Philippou took time to recover. McGee got in a good body shot. He shot in and grabbed a single leg and got Philippou briefly to the ground, but Philippou got right back up. McGee threw a flying knee that didn't entirely connect. McGee landed a short combo. Philippou landed a left. McGee threw a spinning kick but it missed. McGee missed a spinning back elbow. Philippou landed a combo. Philippou landed a hard leg kick. McGee got in a body kick and a punch, then he went for the single leg. Philippou again held it off. McGee threw a high kick that was partially blocked. McGee landed a body punch then shot in and was again stuffed. McGee again went for the spinning elbow. He landed a few more strikes to end the round.
Penick's Scorecard: 10-9 McGee. Too little too late, but he needed to finish the fight in that round and he's going to more than likely lose this decision.
WINNER: Philippou via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)
STAR RATING: (*+) That was a passable fight, but there wasn't a ton to it. Philippou's power didn't allow McGee to do a ton, and McGee was simply ineffective for much of the fight until it was too late. Good win for Philippou, but not worth rewatching.
FIGHT TWO: DEMETRIOUS JOHNSON VS. IAN MCCALL (FLYWEIGHT TOURNEY SEMIFINAL)
ROUND ONE: Johnson came to the center and landed a leg kick early. He got in another good leg kick. More leg kicks landed by Johnson. He popped in with a good left. McCall grabbed a body lock and secured a takedown into half guard. McCall passed to side control and tried to gain mount but Johnson turned him around and got on top. McCall worked back to his feet quickly. Johnson landed a hard left. McCall landed a short stike. McCall caught a kick and pulled off a nice trip on Johnson. Johnson worked back to his feet quickly. McCall landed a short right. Johnson connected on a good elf. Johnson shot in and grabbed a single leg. Johnson landed a hard left and that rocked McCall. Johnson shot in and went for a single leg again but got held off. He landed a left as he released. Johnson connected on a couple more. Johnson threw a high kick that was blocked. The round came to an end.
Penick's Scorecard: 10-9 Johnson. McCall had the two takedowns, but Johnson's striking was the difference in that round and he stunned McCall at one point.
ROUND TWO: Johnson landed an early leg kick. Johnson grabbed a single and connected on a big combination as he let the leg go. Johnson landed a body kick. Johnson landed a nice left. McCall landed a hard leg kick. Johnson connected on a good right. He landed a nice three punch combo ending with a big right. McCall landed a hard right. McCall landed a hard low kick and Johnson needed time to recover. Johnson landed a hard right. Johnson landed a hard inside leg kick. Johnson barely missed a swinging right. They traded strikes in a good flurry. Johnson landed a nice short combo. McCall landed a good leg kick. Johnson landed a hard outside leg kick. They traded strikes. McCall shot in and grabbed a clinch but Johnson held him off. McCall landed a knee. Johnson landed a nice elbow to separate. Johnson landed a good kick. Johnson landed a good body kick. McCall went for a trip but Johnson sprawled nicely. They traded rights. Johnson grabbed the clinch and landed a knee. He landed an elbow on separation as the round ended.
Penick's Scorecard: 10-9 Johnson. His striking output is still the difference in this one. McCall scored a bit more than the first round, but Johnson's still got the edge here.
ROUND THREE: They each traded some strikes early on. McCall landed a good left. He landed a hard leg kick.Johnson landed one inside and McCall reacted like it went low. The ref didn't step in and Johnson landed a short combine. Johnson got in a good kick, but McCall took him down got into half guard. Johnson rolled out and got to his feet. McCall got another takedown and took Johnson's back. He flattened him out and landed a bunch of strikes on the ground. Johnson tried to roll over but McCall held the position. Johnson worked back to his feet and avoided a suplex attempt. Johnson landed a short combo back on his feet. Johnson landed a hard straight kick. Johnson stuffed a takedown attempt, but McCall stayed on him and got into the full mount. McCall postured up and started throwing some big strikes. Johnson was covering up and trying to make it to the end of the round. He did, but it might be too little, too late.
Penick's Scorecard: 10-9 McCall. If two or three of the judges gave that round 10-8 to McCall, we could have our first ever sudden death round here.
WINNER: Johnson via split decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28)
-The crowd started chanting "bullshit" at the decision and were booing.
STAR RATING: (**+) There's going to be a lot of discussion and controversy surrounding this one, as that last round was really close to a 10-8, and the second round was really close. I don't think it was a robbery, but I kind of would have liked to have seen a sudden death round there.
FIGHT THREE: JOSEPH BENAVIDEZ VS. YASUHIRO URUSHITANI (FLYWEIGHT TOURNEY SEMIFINAL)
ROUND ONE: Urushitani threw an early high kick but it was blocked. Benavidez landed a hard body kick. Benavidez backed away from a strike and got in a good leg kick. Benavidez landed a right. He connected again. He pressed the action with a couple of body kicks. Benavidez landed a hard right in close. He closed the distance and got a clinch. Benavidez landed a couple of knees to the thighs. Benavidez pulled off a nice throw and a knee on the way up as Urushitani made it back to his feet. Benavidez landed a knee to the body. Benavidez grabbed a single leg and relentlessly stayed on it to score the takedown into half guard. Benavidez passed to side control as he grabbed a one arm guillotine and used it to get to mount. Urushitani gave up his back. Benavidez tried to grab a choke. Urushitani tried to fight it off to the end of the round and he barely survived.
Penick's Scorecard: 10-9 Benavidez. Close to a 10-8 much like the final frame of the last fight. Benavidez is in front big here.
ROUND TWO: Benavidez landed a huge right immediately that snapped Urushitani's head and dropped him. He followed up with strikes on the ground and the ref stepped in.
WINNER: Benavidez via TKO at :11 of the second round
STAR RATING: (***-) Fantastic flyweight debut for the favorite in this tournament. The Benavidez-Johnson fight many had talked about will determine the first Flyweight Champion in UFC history, but Benavidez left no doubt that he deserves to be in that fight.
MAIN EVENT FIGHT FOUR: THIAGO ALVES VS. MARTIN KAMPMANN (WELTERWEIGHT)
ROUND ONE: Alves stalked early and threw a high kick that was blocked. Alves landed a hard outside leg kick. He connected again. Kampmann circled out, then grabbed a single leg and pressed Alves to the cage. Alves landed some short strikes inside. Alves stuffed the takedown attempt and broke free. Alves landed a left and Kampmann countered with a right. Kampmann landed a hard front kick that rocked Alves. He grabbed the body lock and scored a takedown on the cage. Alves made it to his feet, but he ate a knee for his troubles before separating. Alves was cut over the left eye. They clinched and Kampmann landed some good knees to the body. Alves separated again. Kampmann shot in and Alves held it off. Then Alves pulled off a nice trip takedown into Kampmann's guard. Alves passed to side control. Kampmann regained half guard. Alves passed to mount with over a minute left. Alves landed a couple of short strikes. Alves stayed busy while keeping position as Kampmann tried to buck him off. Alves landed a few strikes and Kampmann escaped as the round ended.
Penick's Scorecard: 10-10. Kampmann had Alves hurt there in the first half, but then Alves nearly stole it back with slick ground work at the end. Not quite enough to take it though.
ROUND TWO: Alves came forward early again. Kampmann briefly shot in but was shrugged off. Alves landed a punch. Alves landed a good two punch combo. Alves landed a hard left hook. Alves landed a good body kick. Alves landed another short combo. Again Alves connected. Kampmann was cut open. Alves with another big shot and Kampmann shot in. Alves held off the takedown. Alves missed a superman punch, but then landed a right. Alves landed a hard leg kick. Kampmann missed the straight kick. Alves landed another left. Kampmann got in a right. Alves landed a left hook. Alves with another right, then he blocked a counter right. Alves landed a left hook again. Kampmann got in a short flurry. He pressed in for a clinch and tried a takedown as the round ended but failed.
Penick's Scorecard: 10-9 Alves. He regained his bearings and had Kampmann completely off base in that round. Strong recovery.
ROUND THREE: Alves began walking forward again and he landed a solid leg kick to start. They traded punches. Alves landed a right and shot in. Kampmann held it off and grabbed a clinch of his own, but Alves broke free. Kampmann came forward with a flurry that didn't connect, but he used it to grab a clinch. Alves landed a knee and broke free again. Alves got in a good right. Alves got in a body kick. Alves landed a hard leg kick. He got in a good jab. Alves landed a few good strikes and kicks. Alves landed a short combo. Alves grabbed a body lock as Kampmann got in close. Alves landed a left. He got in a kick. Kampmann landed a short strike. Alves landed a hard right that rocked Kampmann. Alves scored a takedown, but Kampmann locked on a guillotine choke in a reversal to the mount and forced Alves to tap! Wow.
WINNER: Kampmann via submission (guillotine choke) at 4:12 of the third round
STAR RATING: (***) That's mostly for the finish. Alves made an unbelievably poor tactical error in going for that takedown late, and Kampmann made him pay in what was a fantastic finish. Not only that, but Kampmann was on his way to losing that decision, so that's a huge win for him when a loss was looking likely.
