Over two and a half years after failing a drug test for steroids in the state, his third such failure during his MMA career, the California State Athletic Commission granted him a conditional license on Monday.
The license is for a May 19 bout with Daniel Cormier in the finals of the Strikeforce Heavyweight World Grand Prix, which is being targeted for the HP Pavilion in San Jose.
Barnett's third failure came ahead of a planned fight with Fedor Emelianenko for Affliction, and though he continues to deny any wrongdoing on any of his failed drug tests, the commission will allow him the opportunity to fight. He will be subject to random drug tests prior to any fights in California, but should he pass those tests he'll be allowed to fight in the state.
Penick's Analysis: This was another joke of a hearing by the CSAC in regards to Barnett. Barnett nearly cost himself the license by continuing his denials, as he never appeared for an appeal and was essentially trying to deflect responsibility on the failed test. Then, the CSAC's chairman began talking about licensing Barnett because California needs "good fights, and good fighters" in the state, hardly a reason for licensing a repeat offender. Still, whether the reasons were right or not, eventually it's time to leave the past in the past, and it's been almost three years since the failed test. If it happens again he'll have no excuses, and his career will likely be done.
