However, Sonnen doesn't care whether or not Silva believes he's earned it or deserves it, and said this week he simply took what he felt was his to take.
"There's no validity to anybody deserving anything," Sonnen on Tuesday at the pre-fight press conference (transcribed by MMAJunkie.com. "I didn't come in here and deserve a shot. I'm taking my shot. If a guy says he's ready for the fight, he's ready. That's it. And there's not a lot of guys."
"You can go on the Internet right now, and you won't find one guy that's ever called me out. I've called a lot of guys out. 'He's disrespectful.' They say a lot of things, but they don't say, 'I want to fight Chael Sonnen.'"
Sonnen would ideally like to stay more active than most fighters are allowed, but before that he's got to get himself past this Silva feud. This fight hasn't just been personal for Silva, either, and Sonnen says for him it's not just another day at the office.
"It's never business as usual," Sonnen said. "That's another thing that fighters say. I don't get what that is. This is personal."
"People call this one of the biggest fights of the year. You better check your numbers, guys. This is the biggest fight of all time. This is the biggest fight to ever go down."
Penick's Analysis: There really isn't a question right now, outside of Silva's personal preference, that Sonnen was the right name for this fight. He picked up two wins over two names who were themselves emerging as potential challengers, and there isn't anyone in the division with a better claim for a title shot than him. Saturday night he'll either make good on all of his trash talk from the last two years, or Anderson Silva will put an end to it all for good.
